CUBES

This week the students have been learning how important it is to understand a word problem, develop a plan to solve it by using a variety of strategies, create a number sentence and reflecting on their work. A great way to practice this process is by using the acronym CUBES.

The students created a foldable to always look back on and help them when encountering word problems. They used it when working in their Problem Solving Journal.

Cooperation is key! Students were able to create a poster showing the class strategies and the correct way to work a word problem using cubes and the problem solving board.

Reading Salad

Do you ever find yourself thinking of other things while you read? We found out that we all have this problem when we read. As I read The Sandwich Swap, I modeled how important it is to read and thinking. A great way for students to see this, is by making a salad. The tomatoes represented text and the lettuce represented thinking. This is what we observed:

There is just as much thinking as there is text. Good readers look at the text and stop and think about what the text was about by making connections, predicting what will happen next, or making observations.

Students in table groups read "Red Kayak" and practiced being good readers by making their own salad. Good Job Owls! You are on your way to becoming successful readers.

First Day

It was so great meeting my 2013-2014 Owls today. I know it will be an exciting year! All students got a special treat to survive their first day.

Every year it is important to set goals. Many students shared and posted their goals this year.

Science Time: What do you think of when you hear the word science?
Students found images in magazines that represented their thoughts on science. They used these images to elaborate their Interactive Science Notebook.

Everyday Counts is an important part of our daily math routine. This month we are looking for a pattern. These are the observations the students found.

Wow! What a busy day, but we are headed in the right direction! That's how Owls do it!
